China raises population growth targets for 2017
- China has raised its natural population growth target to 7.5 per 1,000, putting the rate at 1.64/1,000 more than in 2016 and 1.5 higher than the average targets for the 13th Five-Year Plan time frame.
According to guidelines set in March's Report on the Work of the Government, between 19 and 20 million people need to be born in 2017 for China to meet its population goals, QQ News reported.
Li Jianmin, director for the Nankai University Population and Development Institute, said that the raised target was adjusted in line with expected birth rate growth following the implementation of the second-child policy.
